A common tactic in the authoritarian handbook is the suppression of music, dance, art and forms of celebration. Not least, because the vibrant joy they unleash in people creates an emotional momentum that threatens to upend repressive orders. Shared experiences of joy physiologically unite people in a way that makes them harder to divide and dominate. Even momentary flashes of joy provide respite and resilience for activists facing the grinding struggles and slow progress against injustice. So sing, dance, create, love, take pleasure in the little things, generally be joyous, and fuck "the man"!

Originally adopted by Black feminists pushing back against the dehumanization and subjugation forced upon Black women, the opening line from Toi Derricote's poem The Telly Cycle has now been embraced by many activists as a positive force for change.
