Multi fired, hand gilded jug with blue grey slip, earthenware additions and cobblestone glaze.
Images of a dreamlike dark landscape with eyes, baying stag, fungi, roots and old houses.
The erratic gold text explains it all:
"Royal Crownford jug made in Stoke-on-Trent but never glazed. When the factory closed it was picked up with a large quantity of whiteware, unused transfers and equipment. For fourteen years it was kept by Chris Chalkley who founded the peoples republic of Stokes croft in Bristol.
Today fourteen years later it is being finished. I don’t know why after years of festering it begins again for this jug. Until now it has been a work in progress, perhaps its because I want to give it a chance of a new life, to be valued for the scars of its history and be admired. Perhaps its today because I want to have a chance of a new life, a chance to be admired for MY scars, that I won’t settle for survival, that I will transcend the uneasy feeling that I will only be worth something when I’m FUCKING DEAD!"
Bev Milward is an established maker working in porcelain. She is interested in the longevity and sentimentality of ceramics, how they infiltrate our lives and can be used as a tool for communication long after leaving the maker.
Her distinctive landscape collaged pieces have a strong narrative in common with her porcelain work. Her makers mark is a key which is featured on the front of the current British Studio pottery dictionary.
