Josephine Baker 1906 - 1975
An American self-exiled in France due to racism in the USA, Baker was at one time the most famous entertainer in the world, but her political activism was no less notable. Martin Luther King's widow asked her to take over the leadership of the Civil Rights Movement after his assassination, and she was awarded France's highest honour (Legion d'Honneur) for her work in the Resistance during World War II.
