This image was instrumental in the evolution of the idea of Stokes Croft as an Outdoor Gallery. It shows a street scene from the mid 1900s when the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Centre occupied 37-39 Jamaica St, a building known locally as The Carriageworks, now home to Jamaica St Artists, and neighbour ot Stokes Croft China & PRSC. The walls were all painted with various letter forms, not unlike the murals of today.
