The Artist: James Buckley
James Buckley is a British painter whose work explores the relationship between observation and abstraction. Working primarily in oil on paper and board, he uses expressive colour, gestural mark-making and a fluid approach to form to capture the atmosphere, character and emotional resonance of a subject, primarily landscapes.
His practice moves between figuration and abstraction, balancing recognisable forms with looser, more instinctive passages of paint. Interested in the possibilities of colour, texture and the physical act of painting, he seeks to move beyond literal representation, creating work that feels immediate, exploratory and alive.
