Slavery and Bristol provides a clear and moving account of Bristol's role in the trading of slaves.
It looks at the horrors and injustice of the slave trade through the first-hand account of Olaudah Equiano, who was enslaved as a child and who became the founder of the Sons of Africa, the first African organisation dedicated to campaigning against slavery.
It contains chapters on the Bristol slave traders, the captains and crews of the slave ships, the slave owners and the slaves who were brought to Bristol. It describes how the wealth from the slave trade transformed Bristol and the difficult task facing the abolitionists, those brave men and women who strove to end society's acceptance of slavery.
Slavery and Bristol also examines events like the Bristol Bus Boycott, the Black Lives Matter protest, and shows how slavery has encouraged a racism that is still all to prevalent in modern society.
